Holiday Kringle

This festive wreath shaped pastry is perfect for holiday breakfast or brunch! Brown sugar and pecan filling wrapped up in a sweet dough that is crisp like a pretzel on the outside and soft and sweet on the inside. Top with glaze or royal icing and holiday sprinkles!

1. In a large bowl add the flour, sugar, yeast, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.  Whisk together.

2. Melt the butter in a medium bowl.

3. Add the milk and egg.  Whisk together.

4. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour the wet mixture into the center.

5. Mix with a wooden spoon until combined.

6. Knead lightly for a couple minutes.  Dough will be sticky.

7. Place the dough in a large bowl greased with butter and cover with plastic wrap.

8. Place in a warm place for 2-3 hours until dough doubles in size.  While dough is rising, make the filling.

9. In a medium bowl, add the butter, brown sugar, pecans and cinnamon.

10. Mix together with a fork until well combined and crumbly.

11. Line a pizza pan or baking sheet with parchment paper.

12. Roll out the dough into a 24”x 6” rectangle on a lightly floured surface.

13. Spray lightly with water and spread the filling out evenly in the middle of the dough.

14. Fold the two long sides of the dough like an envelope covering the filling in the middle.  

15. Gently flip the dough upside down onto prepared sheet.

16. Form a large circle or oval and pinch the ends together.

17. Cover loosely with a plastic wrap and let rise for another 30 minutes.  Preheat the oven to 400 F. 

18. In a small bowl, whisk together egg and water to make egg wash.

19. Brush egg wash over the dough and sprinkle with sugar.

20. Bake for 18-20 minutes until bottom is golden brown.

21. Let cool completely before on wire rack.

22. Make the glaze.  In a medium bowl add the powdered sugar, vanilla and 1 teaspoon of milk.

23. Whisk together and add more milk until consistency is reached.  Glaze should be thick.

24. Using an icing bag or a knife drip the glaze over the top of the ring.

 

25. Add holiday sprinkles if desired.
